A question for plumbers! Where should the gas shut off valve be if its not next to the meter?

I have a gas boiler right next to my kitchen sink and the gas meter is under the kitchen sink. My next door neighbour has the same type of old house and their gas meter & shut off valve is outside the living room window . My house was renovated before i move in so maybe thats why mines is where in the kitchen but i have no clue as to the shut off valve?
